Nanzen-ji is a high temple to the extent that it is in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, and is a Rinzai sect Nanzen-ji group's head temple.

An official name is called TaiheikoukokuNanzenzenji and Nanzen-ji is also the inside of very many Zen temples,
or a completely special Zen temple in Kyoto Gozan referred to as being further located in a higher rank.
To have opened is made into Emperor Kameyama and founding is made into Daimei-kokusi. In addition, to have been built is set to 1291.
Emperor Kameyama who was establishing the cottage in the ground of the Tenryu temple has Zenrin-ji Den also in this place from the first,
and that Zenrin-ji Den is accompanied by that history under present Nanzen-ji.
Emperor Kameyama who turned into that after abdicated emperor with a Buddhist order is Nanzen-ji of the present
[ named / changed this cottage into the temple by having made Musekifumon into founding in 1291, and / it / Ryuanzan-zenrinzenji ].
It is Naninkokusi in which Musekifumon still lingered and having changed Taiheikoukoku-Nanzenzenji
and a name inherited Ryuanzan-zenrinzenji after that around 1300.
If the admission fee of 500 yen is paid at the Nanzen-ji entrance, in the precincts of a temple,
Hojo Garden currently called [Toranokowatasi] which is designated as the national treasure,
and which is said for there to be a building of length and the Ogata length
almost and for Kobori-Ensyu to have made is located. Moreover,
Nanzen-ji Sanmen is located on this side approach, and it is famous here as one of the Kyoto 3 Daimon.
In the middle of the approach into which the Lake Biwa canal went from these 3 Daimon,
across the approach, it becomes a bridge of the form of a waterway big building,
and is flowing in the inner part of [ right-hand ] the assembly hall.
Stairs are also attached so that this Lake Biwa canal may be gone up on a waterway big building
and it can watch directly. The beginning with the Lake Biwa canal from the first is the canal
started by making Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture into a head in 1885 (Meiji 18),
hollows the mountain land in Kyoto Higashiyama in a tunnel, and is made.
It is said that there was also a role which conveys a ship and goods from Lake Biwa once.
The canal which is flowing on the waterway big building of Nanzen-ji before long is a part
style of the first canal, and is a part of section from Keage to Matugasaki-Water-purifying institution.
