Kamikochi is a scenic spot of the catalpa upper-part-of-a-river style in Matsumoto-shi, Nagano, and it is very popular as spot which can look at the mountains of Shinshu from near the altitude of 1500m. Moreover, in Kamikochi, Taishoike is made with the eruption of Mt. Yake in Taisho 4. The walk way along Azusagawa which reaches the kappa bridge in Taishoike - Kamikochi is the wonderful spot which can enjoy nature fully. The monk practicing asceticism by whom the part to which Kamikochi is made as for mountain worship mountain climbing also by a basis was restricted, and the Matsumoto han of the Edo period built the government official hut near the Tokumoto peak, and only the local woodcutter was just going to be in the mountain. It is called beginning of Mt. Yarigatake mountain climbing in 1828 that the Mt. Yarigatake mountain trail was opened for the first time by the priest and the Banryu saint of the Jodo sect of the Edo period which looked up at Mt. Yarigatake with the peak of the soul. It went into Meiji Era after that, William Gowland who was one of foreign engineers of those days in the process in which the Meiji government invites a foreign engineer and advances modernization of mountain climbing climbed Mt. Yarigatake in 1877 (Meiji 10), and the name of the Japan Alps was attached. Moreover, the name of Kamikochi became famous suddenly by British missionary Walter Weston which has a monument in the walk way which goes to Kamikochi from Taishoike having also carried out Mt. Yarigatake mountain climbing in 1896 (Meiji 29), and having introduced the record to Britain even now. It seems that the name of Kamikouchi was writing it as 神河内 in not present Kamikochi but 神降地, 神合地, and 神垣内 those days [ this ]. The origin of this name comes to be so called from the lineage which is said for Hotakaminomikoto which is an enshrined deity of the Hotaka shrine to have flown down to Mt. Okuhotaka from heavens. That is, the sacred place where not Kamikochi but 神降地 (land in which God has come down), and God descended is considered to be a meaning from the first. It seems still more that maintenance of the road was not carried out like the present, either, but it had left the image of the unexplored region those days. The large-scale mud flow occurred on June 4, 1915 (Taisho 4) in the collapse of a volcanic edifice by the major volcanic eruption of Mt. Yake, Azusagawa was dammed up, it was made only 1 night, and Taishoike is born. Moreover, the iron pot tunnel was tunneled and opened for traffic by what and a hand in 1924 (Taisho 13). A road network is gradually fixed from this hit, and it seems that it becomes markedly easy to carry out access to Kamikochi. moreover, Kamikochi is specified as the scenic spot and natural treasure of a country on March 24, 1929 (Showa 4) -- it was specified also as Chubu Sangaku National Park on December 4, 1934 (Showa 9). Moreover, it is specially upgraded to the scenic spot special natural treasure after that on March 29, 1952 (Showa 27).
