Hogonin is one of the semiautonomous subtemples of the
Tenryu temple of a Rinzai sect head temple, and is next to [ of the Tenryu temple ] south. Looking at the
Tenryu temple at the front, a course will be left at the entrance of Hogonin, if a road is spontaneously
died to the left hand for a left hand. Hogonin calls an official name Daikisan Hogonin and foundation is
1461 years of the Muromachi period. Founding is Yoriyuki Hosokawa who was Kanrei of that time of the
Muromachi government, and foundation is a Zen monk called a HijirinakaEiko Zen priest. The end of the
Zen Buddhism faith which continues from Ashikaga Takauji as a temple in which the Muromachi government
itself acted as founding can hear also here. This Hijirinaka Zen priest asks the third custom grandchild
of Soseki Muso who founded the Tenryu temple.
Although Hogonin is in Zenshoin-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto-shi from the first, it is burned down in the Onin
War after that, and Hideyoshi Toyotomi rebuilds at Tensyo every year (1573 - 1591). Land will be
transferred to the Kogenji precincts of a temple (it is in the Tenryu temple assembly hall right hand) of
the Tenryu temple semiautonomous subtemple after that in surrender and 1972 (Showa 47) for
river-development construction. It will transfer to the present position again very much in 2002
[ latest ] (Heisei 14), and it ages 2002 for the first time in about 150 years, and general public
presentation is carried out. There is a coffee shop called Seisyoken which enters a Hogonin entrance,
and which was not rich, was having been built on the left of the approach at Taisho Era, and was restored
in a crack and 2003 (Heisei 15).
Tea and sweets are obtained here and it goes in the snug tearoom in character with Kyoto to the garden of
Hogonin still more after that. A Hogonin garden is a garden called 作 of the SakugenSyuryo Zen priest who is
equivalent to Soseki Muso's Houson, and is a scenic backdrop excursion type garden with small, artificial
hills and a pond which made Arashiyama the scenic backdrop. This garden is also called Alias Sisikunoniwa.
The origin of the name of Sisikunoniwa is coming from the lion rock of the huge rock which exists in the
center of a garden. Moreover, it is said that the pine of Hagan which broke the huge rock, spread the root
to underground, and has sprung up is also famous.
The principal image of Hogonin is a secret Syokanzeon bodhisattva. The garden of autumnal-leaves time is
brewing green moss and autumnal leaves, and the air that the flow of Sansui is beautiful. The best time to
see of the autumnal leaves of Hogonin is at the the end [ of November ] - end time. Although an admission
fee is 500 yen, there is a common ticket of 900 yen with the Tenryu temple.
